TIPS TO PROPERLY SECURE YOUR BASEMENT WINDOW

Basement windows are usually easy entry points for intruders and burglars. This is because the windows are always at ground level and can be easily manipulated. The following are security measures you can take so as to prevent potential burglars. I believe these are awesome tips as it really helped me made things right, and the beauty is that it was culled from a guide written  by a basement finisher in St. Louis i bought sometime ago during a fair, so enjoy

Keep basement windows visible from the outside

If a basement window is hidden by shrubs or plants, it can attract burglars because it provides them cover which can make their operation easy. If passers-by or neighbors can see your window easily, there is an higher chance of an intruder to be spotted and many won’t want to risk it.

Use shatterproof glass

Do not use weak glass that can easily be broken by burglars. Use shatter-resistant and tough glass for your basement windows; If a thief can’t smash your window quickly, he may give up because of risk of being spotted.

Make your home security system visible

One of the most effective ways of preventing break-ins is a monitored home security system. Make sure that passers-by can clearly see your home security stickers. Also, ensure to secure your basement windows and it must be set up in alliance with the security system.

Security bars should be installed

Heavy security bars made of steel or iron usually offer sufficient protection against intruders. However, these bars must be installed in such a way that firefighters can still make use of the window as an exit point in case of emergency. These bars can be manipulated from the inside most times so that the window can serve as an escape route.

Security film should be applied to the glass

This is a layer of polyester that can placed on the inside of the window. The inner layer will still hold the pieces together if the glass is broken. The broken pieces of glass, stuck together, can prevent burglars.

Make the entry point impossible to pass

You can surprise intruders trying to enter through the basement window by keeping a squeaking toy that makes noise when it is stepped on. You can also place indoor plants or furnitures in front of the basement window so as to make it difficult for the intruder to make it past the entry point.

Use Locks

Reliable set of locks and keys should be used for the basement windows if your windows do not have secure latches or any other locking mechanisms. However, you must be able to open at least one window of the basement windows without keys in case of an emergency.

Block the View Into the Basement

Use glass block that intruders cannot see through to the inside for your basement. This is not only extremely strong and difficult to shatter, it also prevents intruders from seeing any potential dangers, witnesses or obstacles. Use good lighting outside Always ensure your basement windows are usually well-lit at night because a dark home is more likely to attract burgers more than a well-lit one.
